Name Tag

Name Tag in Minecraft

A name tag is an item with which you can rename mobs, including hostile ones.

The name tag doesn't have a crafting recipe. It can be found in chests in different locations, caught fishing or bought from a villager librarian.

If you apply the name tag to any mob, it will not disappear, and it can also get additional effects (see below).

An anvil is needed to use the tag.

  • Minecraft versions: 11 / 10.5.1 / 1.22 / 1.21 / 1.20 / 1.19.1 / 1.19
  • COMMAND: name_tag

Questions about name tag

Here you will find detailed answers to frequently asked questions about name tag.

For the first time name tags appeared in version 1.6.1, they could only be found in treasure chests. In version 1.7.2, it became possible to catch them while fishing, and in version 1.8, name tags were added to the librarian's product range. In version 1.9, name tag can also be found in the trolleys of abandoned mines, but at the same time their number in treasuries has been reduced. In version 1.11, name tag appeared in forest mansions.

You can't create a name tag yourself, it doesn't have a crafting recipe. But there is a chance to catch a name tag while fishing. When using a fishing rod without charms, the probability of catching a tag is 0.8%, and enchantment on "Lucky Fisherman I, II, III" will increase the chance to 1.2%, 1.5% and 1.9%, respectively.

There is a 30%-40% chance of finding a name tag in the amount of one piece in the trolleys of the dungeon, in the chests of treasuries, mines, a forest mansion or an ancient city.

A librarian at the "Master" level can exchange 20-22 emeralds for a name tag.

To use the name tag, an anvil is needed, with which the required name is assigned to the name tag. At the same time, the player will have one level of experience. Then the name tag should be placed in the bottom cell of the inventory, and when it is active, right-click on the mob. The name tag will disappear from the cell, and the mob will have a new name that will appear above it if you hover the cursor over it. You can give names to all mobs except the Edge Dragon.

The player can see the location of the mob with the name at a fairly long distance. This will allow you to quickly find the right mob if the player has several of them.

  • If a mob is given the name Dinnerbone or Grumm, it will be turned upside down. The exception is the parrot. It will be turned over only if it is not sitting on the player's shoulder.
    • Nathan Adams (nickname "Dinnerbone") and Eric Brus (nickname "Grumm") are developers at Mojang. They are engaged in the development of the official server API and its support.
  • If a sheep is given the name jeb_, then its wool will shimmer with all the colors of the rainbow. But if you cut it, the wool will fall out the color that the sheep had before the renaming.
    • Jens Bergensten (nickname "Jeb") is an employee of Mojang, the main developer of Minecraft, one of the developers of the Pocket Edition.

  • If you give the rabbit the name Toast, it will get a rare color that is not found in the game.
    • Ryan Holtz, a former Mojang developer, added this feature to the game at the request of a player with the nickname "Reddit xyzen420". This was the color of the missing rabbit of this user's girlfriend, and Ryan Holtz implemented it as a memory of the missing rabbit.

  • If the Vindicator is called Johnny, he will show aggression to all mobs, except summoners, illusionists, robbers, ghasts and other Vindicator.
    • This is a reference to Stanley Kubrick's horror film based on Stephen King's novel The Shining.

Using an anvil, you can give a name to the summoning egg and spawn the mob immediately with the name, without using a name tag.

If you give a name to a fish in a bucket and then release it, it will keep the name given to it.

The name given to the desiccant with the help of a name tag will be visible constantly above his health bar.

Mobs with names don't disappear. Usually dangerous mobs disappear if the player moves away from them by more than 128 blocks in any plane. This is done to reduce the load on processing game resources. But if a player gives a name, for example, to a zombie and moves away from it by more than 128 blocks, the zombie will not despawn, but will remain in the game until it is killed. This property can be used when creating mob farms so that they continue to function without your participation.

If clicking on a villager with a profession or a traveling merchant opens the interaction menu instead of assigning a name, and the tag is not applied, try holding shift (sit down), and right-click on it again with the tag clamped.
