A name tag is an item with which you can rename mobs, including hostile ones.
The name tag doesn't have a crafting recipe. It can be found in chests in different locations, caught fishing or bought from a villager librarian.
If you apply the name tag to any mob, it will not disappear, and it can also get additional effects (see below).
An anvil is needed to use the tag.
- Minecraft versions: 11 / 10.5.1 / 1.22 / 1.21 / 1.20 / 1.19.1 / 1.19

To use the name tag, an anvil is needed, with which the required name is assigned to the name tag. At the same time, the player will have one level of experience. Then the name tag should be placed in the bottom cell of the inventory, and when it is active, right-click on the mob. The name tag will disappear from the cell, and the mob will have a new name that will appear above it if you hover the cursor over it. You can give names to all mobs except the Edge Dragon.
The player can see the location of the mob with the name at a fairly long distance. This will allow you to quickly find the right mob if the player has several of them.

Mobs with names don't disappear. Usually dangerous mobs disappear if the player moves away from them by more than 128 blocks in any plane. This is done to reduce the load on processing game resources. But if a player gives a name, for example, to a zombie and moves away from it by more than 128 blocks, the zombie will not despawn, but will remain in the game until it is killed. This property can be used when creating mob farms so that they continue to function without your participation.
If clicking on a villager with a profession or a traveling merchant opens the interaction menu instead of assigning a name, and the tag is not applied, try holding shift (sit down), and right-click on it again with the tag clamped.
